The Floyd County Board of Elections will hold a called meeting and public hearing later today.
Agenda items include a vote on the proposed precinct changes.
“Right now we have 25 precincts,” said Elections Superintendent Akyn Trudnak. “With this proposed map, we’re down to 19. So, we are not combining all of them into one huge precinct. We essentially do that with early voting where everyone in the county can come to the elections office and vote. This is precinct specific for election day.”
Elections Board Chair Jerry Lee said issues were discovered during the last election cycle.
“For example, Mt. Alto North and Garden Lakes were both voting at the Anthony Recreation Center,” said Lee. “State law requires that a voting precinct, which is a geographic area, has a unique voting location within the confines of that precinct. One of the things we are going to do as part of this project is to address those issues, correct those issues and put us in compliance with state law.”
Also on the agenda for today’s called meeting is a resolution calling for a referendum on the 2023 special purpose, local option sales tax. The Rome City and Floyd County Commissions along with the Cave Spring City Council have all approved resolutions calling for a SPLOST vote on November 7.
Today’s called elections board meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. with the caucus.
The regular meeting will follow at 6 p.m. at the Floyd County Election Center at 18 East 12th Street.
