Main Elementary School has a new principal.

On Monday, the Rome City School Board voted to hire Taurence Phillips for the job.

“Taurence Phillips brings with him a wealth of knowledge in the elementary education sphere,” said Eric Holland, Rome City School Superintendent. “His passion for student growth and achievement will go a long way in the vision RCS has for Main Elementary School.”

Phillips most recently served as assistant principal with Hutto Elementary School in Bainbridge, and prior to that, he was an assistant principal with Tift County Schools.

He began his career in education in 1998 as a music teacher with the Ware County School System before transferring to Valdosta where he served as choral director of both the middle and high schools.

While in Valdosta, Phillips has also served as an administrative liaison, classroom management program trainer, and extended day program director before being named assistant principal at S.L. Mason Elementary School.

He holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Valdosta State University and a Master’s in Education in Educational Leadership and Administration from Cambridge College. He is currently enrolled in the Georgia Association of Educational Leadership Aspiring Principal Cohort.

“Mr. Phillips’ mission to serve all students with a quality education by using innovative learning tools is just what Main Elementary needs,” Holland added. “His goal, to get Main Elementary back to Blue Ribbon School status while maintaining the community pride, is just what we are looking for in a new principal at Main.”
