(Via WEIS Radio) A 31-year-old Gaylesville man was jailed around 11:00 pm Monday, following a failed attempt to elude deputies; a Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Deputy tried to stop the driver on the causeway along Highway 9 after noticing the vehicle had no tail lights.

Instead of pulling over, the driver fled – with the pursuit continuing onto the Chesnut Bypass in Centre; it came to an end at the intersection of Highway 411 and the bypass when the suspect’s car struck another vehicle. Both occupants of that vehicle were carried to Floyd Cherokee Medical Center for the treatment of non-serious injuries.

The suspect, identified as David Smith, was taken into custody and charged with two counts of felony Attempting to Elude, due to those injuries. After being placed inside the patrol car Smith caused damage by kicking out a window, he then reportedly spat in the face of a deputy. As a result – he was additionally charged with second-degree Criminal Mischief and with Assault with Bodily Fluids.

Smith was transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center, where he currently remains.
