Area residents who are having difficulties paying their water bills could be eligible for assistance following action taken by the Rome City Commission Monday night.

Commissioners voted to participate in the low-income household water assistance program.

Jim Bojo, chair of the water and sewer committee, made the motion to accept the program which will run through the City of Rome billing office and the Tallatoona Community Action Partnership.

“We are accepting this as a pilot program that will last for six months and then we will evaluate it,” he said.  “I think it’s a great program, there just could be some strings attached that we are not aware of.  We just want to make sure we are all on the right track.”

City Commissioner Bill Collins praised Tallatoona for the work they do in the community.

“It’s great that the city gets the opportunity to work with them in assisting citizens with paying their water bills, especially those who have had difficulty in the past,” he said.  “Now that we have imposed a 9% increase, this could not have had better timing.”
