Public health officials fear post-holiday COVID-19 spike

STAFF REPORTS

Public health officials are fearful that we could see another spike in COVID-19 cases as we did following the holidays last year.

Some countries in Europe are already seeing an increase as colder weather sets in and more people are spending time indoors.

“Historically we have seen a spike after the holidays, and I think we will see one this year, said Dr. Gary Voccio, health director for the 10-county Georgia Department of Public Health Northwest District.   “I don’t know how big, how broad, or how long it will last, but I certainly anticipate a spike.

The vaccination rate locally is around 40%, another 10% have had COVID-19 and have built up some immunity.  That leaves around half the population susceptible to the virus.

“We are still experiencing the Delta Variant,” Dr. Voccio added.  “We have not seen any of this UK variant in Georgia.  99.4% of the virus is the Delta variant, not the UK Delta variant.  Again, I anticipate a spike.  Hopefully, it will not be extraordinarily high.”

The best way to protect yourself and your family during the holidays is to get vaccinated.
