Health Department open Columbus Day for flu, COVID-19 shots

October 10, 2021–7:07 p.m.

STAFF REPORTS

Monday is Columbus Day, but the Floyd County Health Department will be open from 9 a.m. to noon to provide COVID-19 and flu shots.

No appointment is needed.

Dr. Gary Voccio, health director for the Georgia Department of Public Health’s Northwest District said influenza and COVID-19 vaccines are different.

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently updated their recommendations and you can get both at the same time,” he said.  “They do not fight against each other, and they do not negate each other.  Your response will be equal to the task unless you are immune-compromised, and that’s a whole different story.  You can get both.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that reduced population immunity due to lack of flu virus activity since March 2020 could result in an early and possibly severe flu season.
