Three Floyd County high school students have been selected to participate in the 2021 Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) this summer. Floyd County Schools is proud to congratulate David Lane, Ashton Vincent, and Zachary Wright! David Lane is a sophomore at Armuchee High School and will concentrate on Mathematics. Ashton Vincent is a junior at Pepperell High School and will concentrate on Agricultural Research, Biotechnology, and Science. Zachary Wright is a sophomore at Coosa High School and will concentrate on Music- Voice: Bass.
Model High School junior Terry Lynn was selected as an alternate at the state level. His concentration is Dance. In the event someone chooses not to accept their invitation to GHP as a finalist, an alternate has the potential to be invited. Alternates are not chosen based on their school district. If a finalist declines to attend an alternate is potentially selected due to a number of factors.
According to the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement, the state-level process was very competitive this year. Of the 3,000 nominees, approximately 1,300 students were selected for an interview at the state level. Lane, Vincent, and Wright were three of Floyd County’s seven semi-finalists who completed state interviews in late February and early March. The students selected to attend GHP demonstrate superior skills in the area of their nomination.
“We are extremely proud of these students. This is an opportunity of a lifetime for selected students. They will be instructed by experts in their field and collaborate with other talented students like themselves,” said McCall Govignon, Director of Advanced Academics and Assessment for Floyd County Schools.
The Georgia GHP is a residential summer program for gifted and talented high school students who will be rising juniors and seniors during the program. The program offers instruction that is significantly different from the typical high school classroom and that is designed to provide students with academic, cultural, and social enrichment necessary to become the next generation of global critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders.
GHP is held in mid-summer (mid-June to mid-July) as a residential educational experience on a college or university campus. Students attend classes in the mornings and afternoons in specific areas of study, and they participate in a wide variety of social and instructional opportunities every evening. Meals and rooms are provided by the program with the only required and expected costs to the students being travel expenses to and from the interviews, a few basic supplies for classes and dorm rooms, and spending money as desired during the program.
