Man charged with fleeing, aggravated assault on a police officer

A 25-year old Rome man is facing multiple charges after fleeing from police Sunday evening.

According to Floyd County Jail records, a vehicle driven by Zachariah Muntain Watkins was traveling in a construction zone on Shorter Avenue at Redmond Circle without headlights and at an elevated speed.

An officer, standing in the roadway, attempted to stop the vehicle, and Watkins swerved toward the officer.

Watkins continued on, refusing to stop.

An officer pulled in front of Watkins to get him to stop and Watkins then turned into a Floyd County Sheriff’s Office vehicle.

Watkins, who is a convicted felon, was found with a 9mm pistol and suspected Xanax tablets.

He is charged with fleeing or attempting to elude, aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, reckless driving, failure to maintain a lane, and driving without headlights.
