The Northwest Georgia Housing Authority’s plan for a new development at Charlton Street and Martha Berry Boulevard got the green light from the Rome City Commission Monday night.

Commissioners approved the housing authority’s application to rezone the property from Community Commercial to Multi-Family Residential.

Howard Gibson, Director of Construction and Modernization for the housing authority spoke more about the development.

“We are planning to build 10 units, five buildings,” he said.  “Six will be one-bedroom and four will be two bedrooms and its all senior housing.  It’s kind of like a mixture of what we’ve done on Maple Street and at Joe Wright Village.  It’s divided up so it will look more like community housing.”

As you may remember, a Sleep Inn had initially been proposed for the property.

However, after residents of the Summerville Park neighborhood expressed objections to the plan, the housing authority stepped up and purchased the property.
