Man arrested on theft, burglary charges

A man accused of breaking into two vacant residences by cutting and removing the padlocks is lodged in the Floyd County Jail.

According to an arrest warrant and jail records, 46-year old Dewel Wayne Hammit of a Young’s Mill Road address in Kingston took two sewing machines during the burglaries on Rockmart Road.

Police say that Hammit also removed the locks on the utility boxes, illegally running power and water to the residences.

When police responded to the scene, Hammit allegedly locked himself in a back room and resisted arrest.

K-9 “Lex” was deployed to get Hammit on the floor.

Hammit is charged with two counts of 1st-degree burglary, 1st-degree criminal damage to property, criminal damage to property, misdemeanor theft by taking, theft of services, obstruction of officers, failure to appear in court, and a probation violation.
