They say every dog has its day, and that day was Saturday in Downtown Rome as the annual St. Petrick’s Day Parade made its way up Broad Street.

In addition to dogs of almost all types, there was also a parrot and even a very special rat named Oliver.

Abby Chesnut with said Oliver is a therapy rat.

“We mostly go around to schools right now,” she said. “We actually became a therapy team this past January, so we are just starting out. Oliver will be a year old in April, so he is not completely full grown and people just love him.”

When you think of therapy animals, dogs mainly come to mind. So, how common are therapy rats?

Chesnut said she doesn’t know of any others but there are also therapy alpacas, rabbits, and Guinea pigs.

The Rome-Floyd Humane Society, Compassionate Paws and Floyd Felines and Friends were also represented at the parade.
