Floyd County Police Chief Bill Shiflett said investigators were hoping to make arrests in the probe into theft from the Floyd County Board of Education last week but they decided to wait after they received new information.
"it led us to more interviews and possible more involvement and it's best we follow those leads,'" Shiflett said.
Shiflett gave his report at this morning' s public safety meeting.
The FBI is also conducting an investigation into the thefts, which police said last month total more than $3 million.
It was last year that it was revealed forrmer maintenance director Derry Richardson was accused of stealing from the Floyd County School System in an elaborate scheme that also led to accusations against contractors and other employees.
The massive investigation has also involved the GBI and the hiring of additional staff by the police to sort through the documents.
Shiflett said between 12 and 14 arrests are expected.
