Wednesday, September 12, 2018- 2:32 p.m.
The latest: Packing 130-mph winds and now racing northwest toward the Carolina coast at 15 mph, Northwest Georgia needs to keep an eye on what happens after the storm comes ashore. The latest forecast map puts Florence — downgraded to a depression — near Northeast Georgia on Monday morning.
State impact: Gov. Nathan Deal declares state of emergency over concerns about Florence’s remnants over North Georgia on Monday. Details below.
Local impact: We could see tropical storm-level winds beginning here between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Friday, continuing into Saturday and Sunday. After landfall, there is great uncertainty as to where Florence will go but there are increased indications that the remnants of Florence could effect at least portions of north and central Georgia late Saturday through Tuesday. The situation continues to be a watch and monitor, so please stay tuned to your local forecast.
From Gov. Nathan Deal: State of Emergency declared. Based on the latest 11 a.m. forecast for Hurricane Florence and acting on a recommendation from Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency officials, Gov. Nathan Deal today issued an emergency declaration for all 159 counties in Georgia. “The state is mobilizing all available resources to ensure public safety ahead of Hurricane Florence,” said Deal. “In light of the storm’s forecasted southward track after making landfall, I encourage Georgians to be prepared for the inland effects of the storm as well as the ensuing storm surge in coastal areas. GEMA/HS continues to lead our preparedness efforts as we coordinate with federal, state and local officials to provide public shelter and accommodate those evacuating from other states. Finally, I ask all Georgians to join me in praying for the safety of our people and all those in the path of Hurricane Florence.” To read the executive order, see below or click here.
