Jobless rate ticks up from May to June

Unemployment rates in Northwest Georgia counties increased in June from the month before, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.

The jobless rate in Floyd County was 4.1%, up from 3.6% in May.

It was 4.7% in June of last year.

Bartow County’s rate rose from 3.3% to 3.6% over the month, but it is still lower than the 4.2% reported in June of 2018.

Gordon County checked in at 3.7%, up from 3.2% in May but down from 4% in June of last year.

Chattooga County’s unemployment rate was 4% last month, up from 3.5% in May.

It was 4.2% this time last year.

Polk County was also at 4%, up from 3.7% in May but down from 4.6% In June of 2018.

Nationally, the unemployment rate inched up 0.1 percent points in June to reach 3.7 percent. Georgia’s rate dropped 0.1 percentage points to settle at 3.7 percent.  A year ago, Georgia’s unemployment rate sat at 3.9 percent.

Meanwhile, Georgia added 20,200 jobs in June, pushing the total to 4.61 million jobs – a new record for the state. That number is up more than 80,000 from the same time last year.
